2.3 | Shape + Silhoutte

A natural progression for myself in this unit once I had received my smart textiles fabric samples was to experiment with the materials on a form. I visualise this trend being aimed at fashion for women’s wear and sportswear. Shape and silhouette is something that it going to be key throughout this project. As I have indicated previously, I want to style the garment suggestions with a sportswear vibe, however I want to create structure within the forms. Looking into 3D printing and feedback loops, I feel that it is necessary to allow the garments to be more abstract and free. Progressing to a mannequin, I have used my 3D shapes that I created to try to create structure. Although I feel the outcome was unsuccessful, the placement of the shapes is random and not well thought out. The shapes need to be larger in scale and the scales of the prints need to be examined. I would also like to create these shapes without the prints, as the trend I am creating is not completely all about print, but shape, structure, functionality and technology. I feel that I now know what I do not want the form to look like.

When looking into shape and silhouette I also used some of the fabric samples that I received from Pharetra. I used these fabrics to create a suggestion of a cuff or a sleeve and a collar. The experiment would have worked better if the sample were larger or less structured. I would like to possibly develop my own fabric inspired by the Pharetra samples.

2.2 | Feedback Loop

As I have used a lot of 3D software, I wanted to take these dimensional ideas and make them 2D again, to create a feedback loop. This loop consisted of 'Photograph > Virtual 3D image > Print out > Physical 3D Shape > Photograph'. This was to see how far I could push the imagery and the concept of dimension; I believe this has added a heightened sense of dimension to my original drawings. This process has been successful as it has pushed my concept further and has leaded me to create a strong visual base for my print collection. The concept of dimensions has also triggered many thoughts in conjunction with my trend prediction. The concept of hyper dimensions is going to come to the forefront in the content within my final trend book. I feel that the actual process’ I have used to create my prints could be linked to trend itself as it is a new feature to the technical world and many will continue to experiment with it as I have. Visualising the idea of dimension will be difficult but an avenue I have chosen to explore further. I plan to portray this within my use of art direction and the composition of my trend book.
